Hiring Nannies Through Care.com Isn't Working
After receiving my umpteenth call this week from a dad sharing how unsuccessful finding childcare has been through Care.com, I knew this had to be our next blog post. Parents are struggling with hiring nannies on their own via Facebook groups, and Care.com! The challenges I hear are that 1. the quality of candidates is low 2. nannies haven’t been reliable, often not showing up to interviews or shifts, and 3. they don’t fulfill the terms of their Work Agreement. These concerns negatively impacts families who need consistent childcare, but also the children who, as a result, go through multiple caretakers. I have to admit that it’s been a challenging market across the United States, and in Rhode Island, but that’s no excuse.
Care.com is a widely utilized childcare platform for both parents and nannies. It is often among the top choices for parents seeking to hire a nanny on their own, alongside platforms like Sittercity and UrbanSitter. As a nanny who has personally utilized Care.com in the past, I have observed the transformations it has undergone and the consequences it has had on the childcare industry. Some of the changes include that it’s no longer free for parents and nannies to use and the nanny wage calculator isn’t a fair calculation of the nanny rates in a community. Hiring nannies at a lower rate will always lead to a high turnover because nannies will subsequently find higher paying jobs.
In August 2024, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said that Care.com has agreed to an $8.5 million settlement for alleged “unlawful practices,” including “deceptive advertising” enticing caregivers to buy subscriptions to apply for jobs and “a number of unlawful tactics” to prevent families from being able to cancel their subscriptions. The settlement arose from a Wall Street Journal report that found the platform didn’t conduct complete background checks of its caregivers, placing that burden on families. The report also found that unvetted, and even unlicensed, daycare centers were also listed on the site and that some of those providers were responsible for the deaths of children in their care.
Back in 2020, Care.com paid $1 million to settle allegations in California over misrepresented background checks and unlawfully enrolling customers in auto-renewal subscriptions.
